Morris Wayne Benson, age 80, died Monday, June 10, 2019 at home.  Mr. Benson was a veteran with ten years of service in the Navy.  He was formerly of Jacksonville where he worked for CP&L.

Mr. Benson is survived by his wife, Betty S. Benson of Beulaville; daughters, Kimberly Joyce Eldred of Potters Hill, Teresa Marie Cabe of Clayton; son Kevin Wayne Benson of Jacksonville; sister, Kaye Dail of VA; 7 grandchildren, Stephanie Metts, Michelle Carroway, Brandi Florent, Kaysi Benson, Kole Benson, Shelby Swanner, Miranda Cabe; and 5 great grandchildren, Brady Metts, Caden Metts, Alexis Metts, Luke Carroway, Kolton Carroway.

William Earl Spell, age 84, died Monday, May 20, 2019 at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville. 
He is preceded in death by his parents, Libby and Florence Spell; stepmother, Marcie Spell; brothers, Festus Spell, Louis U. Spell, Edwin McKenzie; and sisters, Mildred Spell, Mabel Parker, and Patricia Hall.

Mr. Spell is survived by his wife, Blanchie T. Spell of Beulaville; daughter, Renee Spell Tyndall of Jonestown; two sisters, Frances Hall of Fayetteville, Ora Roeigers of CT; brother Lutrell Spell of Freemont; and one granddaughter, Lindsey Blake Tyndall.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cedar Fork Church Building Fund, 668 Cedar Fork Church Rd.  Beulaville, NC  28518.

Richard Lynn Thigpen, age 50, died Wednesday, May 1, 2019, at Vidant Inpatient Hospice in Greenville.

He is survived by his wife Dora Horner of Kenansville; daughters Kristen Horner of Kenansville and Jordan Thigpen of Pink Hill; sons Thomas Thigpen of Kenansville, Joshua Horner of Beulaville, and Kristopher Adkins of Beulaville; brother James Mathis of Rocky Point; and five grandchildren.

David Clarence "DC" Lanier, age 86, of Surf City, NC went to be with our Lord, April 16, 2019. He passed at home of natural causes surrounded by family. 

Funeral services will be Saturday, April 20, at Serenity Funeral Home with visitation at 2 and funeral service at 3, followed by burial at East Duplin Memorial Gardens in Beulaville.  In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to Chapel by the Bay, P.O. Box 2946, Surf City, NC  28445.

D.C. is preceded in death by his father, Frank Lanier, mother, Martha Hettie Pickett and his brother, Frank Harold Lanier. 

Born at home in Lyman, NC on November 28, 1932.  He graduated from Chinquapin High School in 1950.  At the age of 19, he joined the Air Force in October of 1951 until he was honorably discharged a year later due to family hardship.  D.C. and Wilma Brown were married October 9, 1953.  Together they enjoyed traveling to different countries as well as camping throughout the continental United States.  D.C. was an entrepreneur at heart, establishing many businesses throughout his lifetime. He founded Lanier’s Family Campground in 1976.  He and Wilma also donated land for Chapel By the Bay Church where D.C. served as a board member. He loved his family and the church and was dedicated to both.

He is survived by his beloved wife of sixty-five years, Wilma Brown Lanier of Surf City and four children.  Elizabeth Lanier Outlaw and husband “Dobby” Dovelle, Jr. of Albertson, Wayne Lanier and wife Robin of Surf City, Donna Lanier and friend, Barry Meready of Hampstead, Sandra Lanier Raynor and husband Lynn of Hampstead.

Grandchildren:  Dovelle “Dee” Outlaw, III; Phillip Outlaw and wife Dory; LeeAnna Outlaw Wilson and husband Clayton; Jordan Lanier Barkman and husband Brian; Alena Mitchell Smith and husband Joseph; Ashley Mitchell Corbett and husband Hunter; Meagan Raynor, Cody Raynor. Great grandchildren:  Carson Outlaw, Carlee Outlaw, Zoe Smith, Jax Smith, Isla Corbett, Silas Corbett, Rowen Wilson. Two more great-grandchildren are on the way…the legacy continues.

Cecelia Smith Hunter, age 90 of Jacksonville, died April 4, 2019 at Vidant Duplin Hospital in Kenansville.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, April 9, 2019 at 6:00 PM with a memorial service starting at 7:00 PM at Serenity Funeral Home in Beulaville.

Ms. Hunter is survived by her four daughters, Pam Hunter Elsasser of AL, Mindy Hunter Peterson of Jacksonville, Darlene Hunter Powell of Clinton, Teresa Hunter Whaley of Maysville; two sons, Robert Hunter of FL, Ronald Hunter of SC; two brothers, Francis Charles Smith of NY, John William Smith of NY; thirteen grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.
